An optical inverse - Compton hotspot in 3 C 196 ?

چکیده
Several hotspots of FRII radio sources have previously been detected in the X-ray at a flux level consistent with the X-rays being due to inverse-Compton scattering of radio “synchrotron photons synchrotron self-Compton”, if the magnetic fields in the hotspots are close to their equipartition values. However, the number of hotspots compact and bright enough to exhibit detectable X-ray emission is small, so it is worth searching for synchrotron self-Compton emission in the optical, in spite of the obvious observational difficulties of such an approach. In this note I report on a possible detection of an optical inverse-Compton hotspot in a deep Hubble Space Telescope observation of the distant quasar 3C 196, at a level which implies a hotspot magnetic field strength close to equipartition if the electrons have a low-energy cutoff around γ ∼ 500.

Anisotropic inverse Compton emission in the radio galaxy 3 C 265 3
We present the results from a Chandra observation of the powerful radio galaxy 3C 265. We detect X–ray emission from the nucleus, the radio hotspots and lobes. In particular, the lobe X–ray emission is well explained as anisotropic inverse Compton scattering of the nuclear photons by the relativistic electrons in the radio lobes; the comparison between radio synchrotron and IC emission yields a...

متن کاملA Chandra detection of the radio hotspot of 3 C 123
Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the powerful, peculiar radio galaxy 3C 123 have resulted in an X-ray detection of the bright eastern hotspot, with a 1-keV flux density of ∼ 5 nJy. The X-ray flux and spectrum of the hotspot are consistent with the X-rays being inverse-Compton scattering of radio synchrotron photons by the population of electrons responsible for the radio emission ('syn...
متن کاملOptical simulation and experimental measurement of gamma ray energy spectrum of plastic scintillators with different sizes
The application of large plastic scintillators is widely increasing in the different areas of industry, medicine and security due to technical and economic advantages. One of the main disadvantages of these detectors is the unknown position of Compton edge at gamma ray spectrum. In this research, GEANT4/GATE code has been used to simulate the gamma ray spectrum for different volumes of large pl...
متن کاملInverse Compton X-ray Flare from GRB Reverse Shock
We study synchrotron self-inverse Compton radiation from a reverse-shocked fireball. If the inverse Compton process dominates the cooling of shocked electrons, an X-ray flare produced by the first order Compton scattering would emerge in the very early afterglow phase, with the bulk of the shock energy radiated in the second order scattering component at 10-100 MeV. The dominance of inverse Com...
